Your employee has done an excellent job on a project and you feel you want to motivate him to continue. You want to give him positive feedback and are not sure what you should do. This is an opportunity to give employee awards.
When you have given the employee a tangible goal and he/she works to achieve that goal then it is your responsibility to recognize the achievement. Some accomplishment may be small and others may be very grand. Whichever it may be you should demonstrate that it was recognized.
If your employee is motivated he will work very hard and very smart. This is such a winning combination for your business. This example will encourage others to work in this manner so that they too can be recognized.
If you are only using awards to boost morale and using awards when you think morale is low then this may not maintain the morale at a positive level. It may even be self-defeating over the long term as the employees may begin to feel used. You may be providing a negative response rather than the positive one you were hoping for. Consistent and meaningful recognition is the key. The employee of the month awards are a consistent positive approach to recognition. You provide the staff with a monthly goal and therefore they are all eligible for this award. How best to motivate them?
A written thank you left on the desk telling the employee that it was a job well done might motivate that employee to work harder that day. Perhaps inviting the employee to the office to verbally give them your thanks and that of the company for accomplishing a task. You may want to recognize a success by assigning an important task to that person.
Teams should also be recognized for their successes. Your team may have reached an interim goal during a project. Morning coffee with donuts or chocolates for their area would be a way to say thank you. An invitation to a picnic lunch in a park near the office or leaving early one afternoon is certainly a positive reinforcement. These are not expensive forms of awards and the company will benefit greatly.
If your team has successfully accomplished projects it might be time to recognize them by having upper level management present when the team is complimented for their effort and if a specific individual out performed their past achievements then this also is a perfect time to mention it. An actual plaque could be given for the team to post in their area. Being noticed by upper level management creates cohesiveness among the team and they are ready to put every effort into the next assignment. Now upper level management is watching and they are proud that they are watching.
When you award plaques to your employees you are giving them a concrete display of how they are appreciated as a staff member. They are an important part of the company. In realizing this you may find that other staff are motivated to strive for the same reward. When our work is recognized and we feel appreciated we have a positive attitude and are encouraged to continue.
